CCAX-004 Man Portable Linear Mass Accelerator Rifle
The CCAX-004 Man-Portable Linear Mass Accelerator Rifle is an experimental weapon developed by the Columbia Conglomerate Armaments Experimental Division as part of Project Helios, which is intended to modernize and update the entire FLCF's arsenal. Though only in Phase 3 of the seven phase testing process, the CCAX-004 has already been pre-accepted for use by the FLCF when it completes Phase 7 testing. Phase 3 tests have shown the weapon to be highly effective against both personnel and vehicles.
The entire body of the weapon is made up of heavy-strength Titanium-VI, a new formula of Titanium that has only recently been engineered by the Columbia Conglomerate, which sacrifices weight for incredibly high durability and environmental resistance. The barrel and barrel sheath in particular are engineered with additional Tungsten-II threads due to the incredible strain put on the frame during firing. In an effort to slightly reduce weight, the grip and connecting assembly are made of nanocarbon alloys, reinforced with Titanium-V threads. The 004 utilizes a highly advanced Active Nanite System that ensures the gun is constantly at full operational status, and can make repairs to the weapon's systems and mechanisms as needed.
The 004 features the usual technologies found on other weapons, including recoil-absorbing gel-springs in the stock, an adaptive nanopaint that can change pattern to match surrounding camouflage, and a built in holoscreen that displays ammo count, and battery charge. A built-in rangefinder/scanner and laser sight are mounted directly under the barrel and within the scope, and coordinates with the gun's computer to modify how powerful of a shot is needed to reach the target. The 337 is equipped with a default CCA1009DH-K4 Tri-Style Scope that features a digital variable-zoom scope with three modes; standard, thermal, nightvision. For all of these modes, the scope automatically identifies and highlights enemy targets using IFF signals.
Unlike other sniper rifles, the 004 is essentially a scaled-down version of the Linear Mass Accelerators used aboard starships. Inside the outer sheath, the "barrel" of the weapon consists of two magnetic rails inside a tunnel of magnetic coils, forming a helical railgun. When fired, the projectile is drawn down the two rails by both a magnetic current traveling along the rails, and by the sequential activation of the surrounding coils. Thanks to the design of the firing system, the round leaves the weapon at close to 10,000 meters per second and impacts targets with enough force to vaporize unarmored targets and all but destroy all but the toughest of buildings or vehicles. The on-board computer is able to not only calculate the required force of the shot, but also ensures the smooth operation of the magnetic firing system. The extreme energy and forces generated by the 004 make it necessary to swap out the weapon's various parts at fairly regular intervals, a problem which is expected to be solved in the coming decades as development continues and new materials are invented.
The 004 fires a solid 16x65mm tungsten slug with either a depleted uranium or specialized Shatter tip, the former being used for anti-material purposes, and the latter for anti-personnel. Due to the size and weight of the round, and the relatively small profile of the weapon, the 004 does not feature a magazine; instead, it is a break-action single shot rifle. To reload, the shooter pressed presses a safety button and then presses down on the top of the barrel, causing everything forward of the orange break-line (visible in the picture above) to open downwards on the visible circular hinge. The new round is inserted into the breech and the gun is then snapped closed and locked, and is again ready to fire. A skilled shooter can open, reload, and close the weapon in a little under four seconds. Even so, development of an eventual magazine system is underway. The magazine-looking object just forward of the trigger is in-fact the gun's energy cell, which is designed for easy swap, since the cell needs to be replaced after every twenty shots.
