Overview
The Citizens Unified Armed Forces, or CUAF for short, are the military forces of the United Citizens Republics. The CUAF consists of four branches; the United Citizens Navy, the Federal Land Combat Force, the Citizens Federal Marine Corps, and the Unified Home Guard, which are overseen by the Department Of National Defense. The DoND is headed by the Secretary Of National Defense, a civilian and member of the executive cabinet, while ultimate control over the CUAF is vested in the Citizen's Chancellor. The Citizen's Chancellor and Secretary Of National Defense are both advised on policy by the Combined Military Council, which consists of the heads of the four branches of the CUAF. Existing parallel to the CUAF is the Planetary Guard Command, which oversees the Planetary Guard Forces that exist to defend individual planets. These Planetary Guard Forces are composed of both professional and militia soldiers, and usually consist of the Active Guard and the Secondary Guard, the latter of which is a part-time reserve force.
As written in the Federal Constitution, it is the duty of the CUAF to defend the UCR during times of war and conflict, and to ensure the successful expansion of the UCR during times of growth and peace. To ensure that there are always enough personnel to accomplish these goals, the CUAF has adopted a Volunteer-Plus model for recruiting. Under this model, the military is entirely composed of volunteers, with conscription only enforced during invasions of UCR home territory. However, in order to keep up recruitment numbers, persons who join any branch of the CUAF or the Planetary Guard Forces receive special privileges in their civilian lives such as scholarships, tax breaks, discounts on most products, and generous retirement funds. Persons who don't serve do not receive these privileges. This model has caused a scenario where 85% of the UCR's population has served or is actively serving in the CUAF or Planetary Guard Forces.
