Overview
Traditionally part of the UCN, the Citizens Federal Marine Corps was split away from the much larger branch in the early 8950s by then-Supreme Admiral Kalter Weyland. Since then, the CFMC has grown into a proud and powerful organization that serves as the boarding and orbital assault force for the UCN. Soldiers in the CFMC are usually drawn from elite tiers in the other branches, and receive training as both starship operators and as soldiers. Marines specialize in boarding enemy vessels, repelling enemy boarding teams, and deploying from orbit to planetary combat zones. The head of the CFMC is the Marshal, who reports directly to the Secretary Of National Defense. Despite being its own branch, the CFMC is considered somewhat subservient to the UCN, since Marines are always stationed aboard UCN vessels, and are at the disposal of ship's captains to deploy as they see fit.
The CFMC contains several special forces groups (all of which operate under the command of the Unified Special Operations Command), that are well known for their effectiveness and lethality. Possibly most notable are the 106th Special Division, the 34th Rapid Reaction Battalion, and the 404th Special Operations And Tactics Group, all of which operate from secret locations across the nation. Due to their nature, the Marines are often used by the UCR as a first contact team for newly discovered planets, sent in to secure a landing zone before the arrival of the Federal Land Combat Force. Trained to use any and all weapons, and to deal with any situation, the Marines have recently begun to act as land infantry during particularly difficult land combat operations.
